Infrastructure

The Zlín Region is affected by the negative consequences of being a border region, nonetheless joining the European Union in 2004 and the subsequent inclusion into the Schengen Area has helped in eliminating this barrier. Recent years have seen major improvements in the transportation network and thanks to the intensive and ongoing construction of express roads andhighways the region is now directly connected to the nation’s capital (Kroměříž – Prague). This road network is now being extended to Zlín and other major cities in the Zlín Region.

Roads

The road network in the Zlín Region is being expanded through highways and express roads (D1, R55 and R49) currently under intensive construction. The largest towns in the region will be connected to these express roadways.

  • The completion of the D1 in the north-west of the region connected the region to the highway network of the Czech Republic (Section: Kojetín - Kroměříž - Říkovice).
  • The R55 forms the region’s important north-south road transport axis; the Hulin – Otrokovice section is complete.

A priority for the Zlín Region is the development of a primary roadway network:

  • The R49 forms the region’s east-west road transport axis. The Hulín – Fryšták section will be completed in 2022 and a section from Fryšták to the border with Slovakia is in the planning phase.
